Puppy Growth Stages & Weight Chart: When Do Dogs Stop Growing?
Published by MaunaPet. Editorial policy and sources.
Watching a fluffy 8-week-old puppy develop into a majestic adult dog is one of the most rewarding experiences of pet parenthood. However, puppy development occurs rapidly, with dramatic shifts in nutritional requirements, skeletal calcification, and cognitive leaps occurring in weeks rather than years.

The 4 Developmental Puppy Milestones
1. Primary Socialization Window (Weeks 8 to 16)
This is the golden period of brain plasticity. Puppies must be safely introduced to a wide range of surfaces, sounds, gentle people, and vaccinated dogs. Core immunizations (DHPP and Rabies) must be completed during this phase.
2. The Growth Spurt Peak (Months 3 to 6)
Between 12 and 24 weeks, puppies gain weight at their fastest rate. High-quality puppy food rich in DHA (docosahexaenoic acid for brain development) and balanced calcium-to-phosphorus ratios is critical.
3. Adolescent Phase & Hormonal Changes (Months 6 to 12)
Teething completes around 6 months as 42 adult teeth emerge. Hormonal maturation begins, accompanied by increased boundary-testing behavior.
4. Growth Plate Closure & Adult Transition (Months 10 to 24)
The epiphyseal growth plates at the ends of long leg bones gradually mineralize and close. Strenuous jumping or high-impact agility training should be avoided until growth plates are fully closed.
