How Dog Pediatric Growth Curves Work

Unlike humans who grow at a relatively linear pace over 18 years, dogs experience dramatic, steep growth curves in their first months of life. The exact growth curve is dictated primarily by adult breed size category.

1. Toy & Small Breeds

Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, and French Bulldogs grow the fastest relative to their adult size, often reaching 50% of their adult weight by 11–13 weeks and finishing skeletal development by 9–11 months.

2. Medium & Large Breeds

Beagles, Goldens, and Labradors double their 16-week weight to reach adult weight. They reach 50% of their adult size between 16 and 20 weeks and stop growing around 12 to 15 months.

3. Giant Breeds

Great Danes, Saint Bernards, and Mastiffs have prolonged skeletal growth plates that remain open until 18–24 months. Controlling calorie and calcium intake is vital to prevent Hip Dysplasia.
