Core vs. Lifestyle Vaccines: Understanding the Difference
Veterinary organizations divide animal immunizations into two crucial categories:
- Core Vaccines: Mandatory for every dog and cat regardless of geography or lifestyle. These protect against highly contagious, airborne, or fatal pathogens that have substantial morbidity (like Rabies, Canine Parvovirus, and Feline Panleukopenia).
- Lifestyle (Non-Core) Vaccines: Recommended based on geographical exposure, outdoor activity, and contact with other animals (e.g. Leptospirosis for dogs drinking from puddles, or FeLV for outdoor cats).
Frequently Asked Questions
Mild lethargy, slight tenderness at the injection site, and a low-grade fever for 24 to 48 hours are normal immune responses. However, if you notice facial swelling, hives, persistent vomiting, or difficulty breathing, contact your emergency veterinarian immediately as these indicate an acute allergic reaction.
A titer test is a blood test that measures circulating antibody levels against specific viruses (like Parvovirus and Distemper). If the antibody titer is sufficiently high, your dog is considered protected, and your veterinarian may safely defer revaccination for that disease.
