โš ๏ธ Critical Veterinary Warning on Home Induction of Vomiting: Do NOT give your dog hydrogen peroxide, salt, or baking soda to induce vomiting at home unless explicitly instructed by a licensed veterinarian. Home remedies often lead to severe hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, aspiration pneumonia, or fatal hypernatremia. Emergency veterinary hospitals use safe, targeted medications (e.g. apomorphine or ropinirole).

Symptoms Timeline & Theobromine Pharmacokinetics

Unlike humans, canines lack the hepatic enzyme pathways to rapidly clear methylxanthines. The biological half-life of theobromine in dogs is 17.5 hours. This means symptoms can persist or escalate over 24 to 72 hours.

Expected Clinical Symptoms by Dose:

  • < 20 mg/kg (Mild GI): Mild vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, flatulence.
  • 20 โ€“ 40 mg/kg (Moderate): Restlessness, panting, hyperactivity, increased thirst and frequent urination, tachycardia (fast heart rate).
  • 40 โ€“ 60 mg/kg (Cardiotoxic / Severe): Cardiac arrhythmias, hypertension, muscle tremors, hyperthermia, uncoordinated gait (ataxia).
  • ≥ 60 mg/kg (Critical / Lethal): Generalized seizures, severe arrhythmias, collapse, respiratory failure, and coma. Immediate ICU hospitalization required.

Frequently Asked Questions

White chocolate contains virtually no cocoa solids, meaning the theobromine content is negligible (approx. 0.1 mg/g). However, its extremely high sugar and butterfat content can still trigger acute pancreatitis, which requires monitoring.
If within 2 to 4 hours of ingestion, the vet will induce emesis safely and administer multiple doses of activated charcoal to bind remaining theobromine. For higher doses, IV fluid therapy promotes urinary excretion, and beta-blockers or anticonvulsants are administered to protect the heart and brain.
