How to Test If Your Dog Is Dehydrated (3 Quick Tests)

Veterinarians check hydration status using simple physical indicators:

1
The Skin Tent Test (Elasticity): Gently lift the skin between your dog's shoulder blades and let go. In a well-hydrated dog, the skin snaps back immediately in under 1 second. If it stays tented or moves slowly, your dog is likely dehydrated.
2
Gum Moisture & Color: Lift your dog's upper lip and touch the gums. Healthy gums are slick, wet, and salmon-pink. If they feel tacky, dry, or sticky, fluid levels are depleted.
3
Capillary Refill Time (CRT): Press your thumb firmly against the pink gum for 2 seconds until it turns white, then release. The pink color should rush back in less than 2 seconds. A delayed CRT (> 2.5s) indicates compromised circulation or dehydration.

When to Worry: Polydipsia (Excessive Drinking)

While dehydration is a risk, drinking too much water (known clinically as polydipsia — consuming over 100 ml per kg of body weight daily) is often an early warning sign of chronic disease:

Frequently Asked Questions

Commercial canned wet food and fresh diets consist of 70% to 80% moisture. When eating canned food, a dog gets roughly half of their daily hydration straight from the bowl of food. In contrast, dry kibble has only 10% moisture, requiring the dog to drink almost their entire water quota from the water bowl.
Water bowls should be thoroughly washed with warm soapy water at least once daily to prevent bacterial biofilm build-up. Fresh, cool water should be replenished at least twice a day.
In general, if tap water is safe for human consumption in your municipality, it is safe for your dog. However, if your tap water has high mineral hardness or heavy chlorine smell, filtered water is gentler on your dog's urinary tract.
