Kitten weight chart: birth to 12 months

Approximate healthy weight ranges for standard-size domestic kittens. Males tend toward the upper end and females toward the lower end. Large breeds can weigh 20–40% more from about 3 months.

How to weigh a kitten at home

For kittens under 4 weeks, use a digital kitchen scale that reads in grams and weigh at the same time each day, before feeding. Newborn kittens should gain weight every day and roughly double their birth weight in the first 1–2 weeks. From weaning onward, weekly weigh-ins are enough until 6 months, then monthly.

For older kittens that won't sit on a kitchen scale, weigh yourself on a bathroom scale, then weigh yourself holding the kitten, and subtract. Write every result down — a trend over several weeks tells you far more than one measurement.

How fast should a kitten gain weight?

A useful rule of thumb is about 10–15 g per day (roughly 70–100 g per week) in the first weeks, and around 0.4–0.5 kg (about 1 lb) per month between 2 and 6 months. Growth slows after 6 months, and most cats reach adult size around 12 months. Large breeds such as Maine Coons and Ragdolls keep filling out until 3–4 years of age.

How to tell if your kitten is overweight or underweight

The scale only tells half the story. Run your hands along the ribs: you should feel them easily under a thin layer of fat, see a gentle waist from above and a slight tuck behind the ribs from the side. Our cat body condition score tool walks you through the check, and our guide on how to tell if your cat is overweight explains the 1–9 scale.

True obesity is uncommon in young kittens, but weight gain often speeds up after neutering (usually around 5–6 months), when energy needs drop. Measure meals with a scale and use the cat calorie calculator to set portions.

When to call the vet: a kitten under 8 weeks that does not gain weight for 24 hours or loses weight, a kitten that stops eating, has diarrhoea or vomiting, seems weak or cold, or an older kitten whose weight has not changed for more than a week.

Growth milestones to plan for

Weight checks fit naturally with other kitten milestones: the first vaccines usually start at 6–8 weeks, with boosters every 3–4 weeks until about 16 weeks (see our kitten vaccination schedule or build one with the vaccine schedule generator). You can also convert age with the cat age calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a 2-month-old kitten weigh?

Most 8-week-old kittens weigh about 750 g to 1 kg (1.7–2.2 lb). Many shelters and breeders wait until a kitten weighs around 1 kg before rehoming.

How much should a 3-month-old kitten weigh?

A typical 12–13-week-old kitten weighs about 1.1–1.6 kg (2.4–3.5 lb). Large breeds can be heavier.

How often should I weigh my kitten?

Daily for the first two weeks or for any kitten that is bottle-fed, weekly from weaning until about 6 months, then monthly.

Can a kitten be overweight?

It is uncommon but possible, especially after neutering. Judge weight with a body condition check, not only the scale, and talk to your vet before reducing food for a growing kitten.

When do cats stop growing?

Most cats reach adult size around 12 months. Large breeds such as Maine Coons may keep growing until 3–4 years.

My kitten is not gaining weight. What should I do?

A kitten under 8 weeks that does not gain weight for 24 hours, or loses weight, needs a vet promptly. For older kittens, a week without gain is a reason to book a check-up; parasites are a common cause.
