How Veterinary Cat Calorie Formulas Work
Veterinary nutritionists calculate feline energy requirements in two stages:
- Resting Energy Requirement (RER): The basic calories needed for organ function and breathing at rest. Formula:
RER = 70 × (Weight in kg)0.75. - Daily Energy Requirement (DER): The actual calories burned based on activity, neuter status, and age (
DER = RER × Multiplier).
Common Cat Weight & Calorie Guidelines

- Large Frame (6 kg / 13.2 lbs): ~260 – 290 kcal/day.
