Understanding Dog Body Condition Scoring (WSAVA Standards)
Just looking at a scale number isn't enough: muscle-to-fat ratios vary significantly between breeds like Greyhounds, Bulldogs, and Golden Retrievers. The WSAVA Body Condition Score is the clinical gold standard used by veterinarians worldwide.
1. The "Knuckle Test" for Ribs
Make a fist with your hand. Feeling your knuckles feels like an underweight dog (BCS 1–3). Feeling the back of your flat fingers feels like an ideal dog (BCS 4–5). Feeling your palm feels like an overweight dog (BCS 7–9).
2. Why 10% Extra Weight Matters
In a 30 kg Labrador, being just 15% overweight means carrying 4.5 extra kilograms on canine hip and stifle joints, quadrupling the risk of cruciate ligament tears and canine arthritis.
3. Safe Weight Loss Velocity
A healthy rate of weight reduction in dogs is 1% to 2% of body weight per week. Crash dieting causes muscle wasting and lethargy. Gradual caloric deficit preserves lean muscle mass.
